Background
Reliable and timely information on mortality rates and cause-specific mortality is fundamental for improvements in population health through informed health policies and programmes. Effective mortality information systems count all deaths, assign their cause of death, host them in a database and put in place a mechanism to analyse this data to support decision making at local at local, state and national levels.
